How to Check Rolex Authenticity by Serial Number
Every authentic Rolex watch has a unique serial number that can be used to determine its production date and legitimacy. For a complete Rolex serial number lookup, you must first locate the engraving on your timepiece.
1. Locate the Serial Number
On modern Rolex models (produced after 2005), the serial number is engraved on the inner rehaut (the metal ring between the dial and the crystal) at the 6 o'clock position. On older vintage models, you will need to remove the bracelet to find the number engraved between the lugs at 6 o'clock.
2. Verify the Engraving Quality
Rolex uses a high-precision diamond-cutting process. The lines should be fine, sharp, and deep. Many fakes use acid-etching, which results in a "sandy" or faded appearance when viewed under a loupe.
3. Rolex Datejust Serial Number Check
If you are performing a Rolex Datejust serial number check, ensure the model number (located at the 12 o'clock position between the lugs) matches the serial number era. A mismatch between model type and serial sequence is a primary indicator of a "frankenwatch" or replica.
